Fresh From Captain Fresh: Company Turns Profitable Ahead of IPO

Tech-led seafood platform scales globally with disciplined, asset-light execution.

BENGALURU, Oct 31: Captain Fresh, a technology-driven global packaged seafood company, has emerged as one of the fastest-scaling businesses in India’s startup ecosystem as it moves closer to a public listing, recording a 145% year-on-year surge in operating revenue to ₹3,421 crore in FY 2025, up from ₹1,395 crore in FY 2024.

In a rare milestone in India’s supply chain and consumer-tech space, the company has turned profitable within five years of launch, posting a profit after tax of ₹42.4 crore, compared with a loss of ₹229 crore in the previous fiscal year.

Few Indian startups have crossed the profitability threshold this quickly. By comparison, major listed or high-growth players such as Delhivery, PolicyBazaar and Lenskart took 10–16 years to turn profitable. Captain Fresh’s achievement places it among a small group of companies including Groww and PhysicsWallah that reached scale at speed, but with profitability discipline.

Founded in 2020 by Utham Gowda and headquartered in Bengaluru, Captain Fresh operates an asset-light, vertically integrated seafood supply platform. Its model spans sourcing, processing, cold-chain movement and distribution, without owning capital-heavy infrastructure. This structure has enabled rapid international expansion while maintaining margins and flexibility. The company sells across the U.S., Europe, the UAE and India under brands including CenSea, Ocean Garden, Koral, Senecrus and ChopServe.

Backed by Accel, Tiger Global Management, Prosus Ventures and Z47 (formerly Matrix Partners India), Captain Fresh represents a technology-first disruption in a traditionally fragmented sector. In August 2025, the company filed a confidential draft prospectus with SEBI, signalling preparations for a potential IPO.

As India’s public markets continue to reward profitable growth companies, Captain Fresh’s trajectory underscores how sectoral digitisation, supply chain integration and operational discipline can create scalable, globally competitive businesses from India.
