…as Rubio’s India Tour Takes a Cultural Detour
NW DELHI, May 25 (The CONNECT) – A packed diplomatic schedule briefly gave way to tourism and light banter as Marco Rubio prepared for his first-ever visit to the Taj Mahal during his India trip.
Asked by reporters what he expected from the visit, Rubio admitted he had never seen the monument before — before joking that the only “Taj Mahal” he previously knew was the casino once linked to Donald Trump in New Jersey.
“But no, look, it’s one of the wonders of the world,” Rubio said, quickly turning serious as he described the visit as a gesture of respect toward India’s culture and history.
Rubio said a scheduling gap before the next day’s Quadrilateral Security Dialogue meetings created an opportunity to visit one of India’s most iconic landmarks.
“I think it’s important to show respect to the culture of the countries that you visit,” he said, praising India’s “diversity” and “tremendous history.”
The stop also briefly turned into a discussion about media access after reporters learned the Taj Mahal visit would likely be closed to press coverage.
“I just don’t think they want press coverage, that’s all,” Rubio told journalists, clarifying that the restriction was not imposed by the U.S. delegation.
The lighter exchange offered a rare pause from a trip otherwise dominated by discussions on Indo-Pacific security, China, West Asia tensions, and strategic coordination among Quad partners.
