Civic Body Announces Diwali Gift For 65+
In a Diwali Dhamaka, NMMC announces free bus rides for senior citizens living within the city limits.
NAVI MUMBAI, Nov 11 (The CONNECT) – Celebrating Diwali, Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) will offer free rides for senior citizens from November 13.
The facility on Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport (NMMT) fleets will be applicable for the silver citizens living within NMMC area, Municipal Commissioner Rajesh Narvekar said.
It is notable that the decision is not political as the decision has been taken by the municipal administration. The civic body does not have an elected body and the elections have been on hold ever since the COVID era.Senior citizens will have to obtain identity cards from NMMT by presenting age proof for Aadhar card copy, along with the proof of residence of NMMC area and three passport size photographs.

Currently, NMMT offers a 50% discount to passengers in the age groups of 65 plus. Now, the civic body has decided to sweeten the deal by making the rides 100% free for the seniors.
For the uninitiated, NMMC covers the Thane district part of the city from Dighe in the north, Vashi in the west and Nerul in the South to Belapur in the west.The rest of Navi Mumbai as planned by CIDCO is governed partly by Panvel Municipal Corporation, Uran Municipal Council and the rest by gram panchayats.
NMMT runs city bus services to Mumbai, Borivali, Thane, Bhiwandi, Kalyan, Ambarnath, Badlapur, anvel, Khopoli, Karjat, Rasayani and Uran apart from within the NMMC area. It runs buses in 75 routes, including 32 air-conditioned services.NMMT has a fleet of 541 buses – 85 CNG-fired, 56 A/C Volvo and 195 A/C electric passenger vehicles.
