Enhancing biodiversity conservation, fostering environmental responsibility among visitors.

HYDERABAD, May 06 (The CONNECT)- Nehru Zoological Park as a model for sustainability and environmental stewardship in India, the authorities say.

United Way of Hyderabad (UWH), in partnership with HSBC Global Service Centres, India, marked the completion of the first year of the Biodiversity Conservation and Energy Transition project at the    Zoological Park.

The project, which commenced in November 2024, has driven significant advancements in renewable energy and clean mobility solutions within the zoo. Over the past few months, the initiative has successfully introduced electric vehicles for staff and visitor transport, including 13 EV bikes with carriers for animal care staff, 6 EV bikes for other staff and 6 battery-operated buggies for visitors, and installed 80 solar streetlights at various locations in the park.

The handover ceremony was attended by key stakeholders and project partners, including Paul Raddon, Head of HSBC Global Service Centres, who celebrated the project’s achievements and its impact on sustainable conservation efforts.

Reflecting on the milestone, Rekha Srinivasan, CEO of United Way of Hyderabad, said, “This initiative has already started making a measurable difference in reducing the zoo’s carbon footprint. Through innovative interventions, we are not only enhancing biodiversity conservation but also fostering environmental responsibility among visitors.”

Mamatha Madireddy, Head of HSBC Global Service Centres, India, said, “Our support for providing renewable energy and clean mobility solutions at The Nehru Zoological Park reflects our enduring passion for building a thriving future for businesses, communities, and the planet. This initiative is another step towards a cleaner and more resilient ecosystem. By embracing green solutions, we are not just reducing our footprint, we are setting a precedent for sustainable progress”.

Dr. Sunil Hiremath (IFS), Director NZP, explained how the programme would enable the zoo to better leverage funds for infrastructure maintenance, research and outreach programmes. A Memorandum of Understanding was exchanged between NZP and UWH, solidifying their commitment to the long-term sustainability of this program and the co-creation of other programs of mutual interest in the future.

During the event, attendees had the opportunity to witness firsthand the installed solar infrastructure and electric mobility solutions and participate in a tour of the zoo and a discussion on sustainable zoo management practices.

Building on this success, Year 2 of the project will focus on further enhancing sustainability initiatives through the addition of further e-mobility solutions, including a wildlife ambulance and a rescue van, installation of solar fencing and a 60-kw solar power generation system, ensuring Nehru Zoological Park remains a benchmark for eco-friendly practices
