Digital Education and Gamification of Content will be the Future, say SACHIN SARDANA & AJAY KUMAR RATHORE
Ed Tech or technology for imparting knowledge and education without in person classes, fixed timings, school infrastructure or fixed set of teachers is a philosophical contradiction to traditional methods of Indian learning. Still, the concept of remote classes using mobile phones, computers, tablets connected to internet had percolated down to the grass roots. Despite the fact that there is no doubt of the relevance of traditional teaching methods, the only reason why technology enabled education has been able to penetrate deep, is the sheer extent of outreach that technology can have with least investment.
It is very justly said, “If we teach today’s students as we taught yesterday’s, we rob them of tomorrow.” And in times of technological advances, imparting knowledge and training is a continuous process that need to be available for students, aspirants of competitive examinations and even professionals who are inclined to increase knowledge. The outreach and impact on education sector has been changing rapidly and vividly in the last decade and is expected to further align with technology. The previous concepts of “Distance Learning,” and “Online Classes” have now morphed into online examinations, computerized evaluations, curated content and AI led developmental analysis.
Today, the use of advanced technology prevails from the entertainment to healthcare, transportation to engineering and in every sector impacting the economy. Compared to these sectors, education faces a challenge in online content and technology savvy instructors. We need to understand that the transformation of education sector will not only need technology but convincing both the students and teachers to take advantage of the available processes is also important as the change is not easily welcomed by them. The process of adaptation post pandemic of COVID19 has been rapid and systematic. Educational institutes, private trainers, coaching classes—all have adapted to online teaching and become technology savvy.
Here is why the entire Education Ecosystem need to adopt online learning:
1- Online learning is the new normal
Learning is a continuous process. “Online Learning” is advocated not only for students but for everyone who wants to improve themselves through a subject video on YouTube or enrolling in a virtual class. The beauty is, it is not necessary to go physically or discuss the situation with anyone, but just to take the initiative of learning. Entrepreneurs and businesses that provided the audience and customers with diversified and updated content succeeded.
2- e- Learning, that was perceived temporary is, in fact, not so temporary
It is not just a trend in the market, but a new approach which has proven to be really useful for educational outreach. This approach of conducting virtual trainings and course work has helped the educational institutions to reduce overhead costs and also keep a continuous interaction with the students. Moreover, institutions have been able to go deeper in the suburbs and villages given the fact that online courses are much less expensive.
3- The magic of AR and VR
The technologies such as Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality and Artificial Intelligence are proven to be really effective because it gives interactive environment to the learners. These technologies offer cartoon based content and visual content for learners for faster grasp of content. These technologies together have changed the entire gamut of basic learnings.
4- What is better than playing a game and learning something by the end of it?
We all know how tiring it is to keep studying the same way, we have been doing for all these years. Gamification of educational content is the new prescription to make an impact on learning and grasping capacity of kids. There are numerous companies who have invested in making education fun. Not only physical toys, but digital apps that can teach language, develop cognitive skills, sporting qualities and a sense of cooperativeness.
5- Digital Learning and understanding the learner’s mind
Online teaching and digital learning makes it easier for analyzing the mind of the learners from their behavior and other traits. Artificial Intelligence can even help the trainers and teachers find out the weakness of each student and help in individual lesson planning—much in the way a private tutor would help each student of the batch. Today the applications and websites have interactive sessions and comprehension quizzes to determine the lack of strengths and study the students better—thus helping them to get the best possible course of action.
Thus, ed-tech is not only providing the luxury of "learning at your doorstep" but other far-fetched benefits which we could not have planned otherwise. The most important contribution of technology in education is to the learners from remote areas, who do not have any infrastructure whatsoever for education. Digital screens have made up for the inadequate facilities and content. The limited available resources in education and training today have a much wider impact as the medium has changed from brick and mortar to digital. Appropriate help, support and digital engagement is paving the way towards the dream of Digital India.
