KOLKATA, Apr 9 (The CONNECT) – Medica Superspecialty Hospital has successfully removed of a nose pin screw from the lung of a woman in her mid-thirties. Led by Dr. Debraj Jash, Director, Department of Respiratory Medicine, the expert team at Medica Superspecialty Hospital conducted the procedure with precision and skill.
Barkha Devi, a homemaker in her mid-thirties (name changed for privacy) accidentally inhaled the screw of her nose pin a few months back. The incident, initially dismissed, took a dramatic turn when an X-Ray, following a nose injury several months later, revealed the presence of the object lodged inside her lung.
The complexity of the situation escalated when attempts to extract the object using conventional bronchoscopy failed by the doctor who was treating her first and then referred her to Dr Jash.
The doctor said, the screw of the nose pin was stuck in a very atypical position. It was extremely difficult to bring the sharp object out with a regular flexible bronchoscope owing to its precarious location, possibility of injury, and the anatomical distortion resulting from its long presence there.
Traditionally, such cases necessitate invasive surgery involving the removal of a portion of the lung to prevent potential complications. Dr. Jash and his expert team, however, decided to explore an alternative approach. Despite the odds, they opted for conventional bronchoscopy, showcasing their commitment to innovation, patient safety and patient-centric care.
