WHO Says No to herd immunity for COVID

Many people will get infected and die


MUMBAI, Aug 27 (BNC Network): World Health Organisation today ruled out herd immunity as a possible solution to the COVID pandemic.

The practice is fraught with dangers as many people will die as they can get infected if masses are allowed to move around, said Maria van Kerkhove, the COVID-19 technical lead at the World Health Organization (WHO).

Maria was responding to a question from an Indian journalist if of herd immunity is answer to the pandemic.

Addrtessing a virtual global media meet, Maria said efforts were therefore focused on vaccine for COVID to ensure that a large number of people – 60 to 70 % of the population – protected against the virus, Maria said.

Ever since the pandemic hit the world, the question of herd immunity has been discussed with some sections vehemently opposing the lockdown.

The issue has been discussed by some doctors in media.
