Govt Co To Buy ‘Farm’ Power
The solar power generation centres will be set up in Bijnor, Hathras, Mahoba, Jalaun, Deoria and Lucknow, says UP Govt
LUCKNOW, Jan 14 (The CONNECT) – In unique move, the Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation (UPPCL) has entered into a power purchase agreement with farmers in six districts on 7 MW solar power generation projects as part of the Kusum Yojana.
Under this, farmers will set up solar power generation centres on their barren or uncultivable farmland with the assistance of various banks. Additionally, the government will provide subsidies of 90% the cost of solar pumps. Selling the electricity produced by this solar power generation centre to the government or private power companies will enable farmers to boost their income.
The Solar power generation centers will be set up in Bijnor, Hathras, Mahoba, Jalaun, Deoria and Lucknow with output ranging from from 0.5 MW to 2 MW.

Through WhatsApp messages, UPPCL offers services to help power users with their bills and other issues. At present, there are about 3.30 crore electricity consumers in the state, out of which 33 lakh have given their consent to avail the facility of receiving messages.
UPPCL Chairman M Devaraj has given instructions to run a campaign to extend the benefits of this facility to all consumers. In the meeting organized at Shakti Bhawan, he has also appealed to the power consumers of the state to take advantage of this facility provided by the Power Corporation and get their electricity bills and other problems resolved online.

M Devraj, the chairman of the Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation, said the programme will provide farmers with two different types of benefits. They will first be able to use solar-powered irrigation pumps in place of the outdated diesel irrigation pumps. Second, by selling the electricity produced by the solar plant installed at the farm to the power providers, they can make an additional Rs 80,000 each year.
Under the Kusum scheme, 5 acres of land is required to set up a 1 megawatt solar plant. That is, one acre of land generates 0.2 megawatts of electricity. Through this scheme, farmers can also eliminate the problems related to electricity in their area. The pumps given under this scheme will be installed in place of agricultural pumps that run on electricity and diesel.
