Dr Singh’s interventions in Parliament were insightful – PM Modi’s significant homage.
NEW DELHI, Dec 26 (The CONNECT) – Former Prime Minister, economist and veteran Congress leader Dr Manmohan Singh is no more.
Dr Singh breathed his last at All India Institute of Medical Sciences tonight. He was rushed to the hospital earlier as his condition deteriorated.
India mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished leaders, Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a message posted on X platform.
“Rising from humble origins, he rose to become a respected economist. He served in various government positions as well, including as Finance Minister, leaving a strong imprint on our economic policy over the years,” Modi said.
Dr Singh’s interventions in Parliament were also insightful. As our Prime Minister, he made extensive efforts to improve people’s lives, Modi recalled.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said “Undoubtedly, history shall judge you kindly, Dr. Manmohan Singh ji!”
Kharge was referring to Dr Singh’s remarks that history would judge him better than the media as the former premier was under a constant media bashing for alleged corruption – now unproven – charges against his regime.
“With the passing of the Former Prime Minister, India has lost a visionary statesman, a leader of unimpeachable integrity, and an economist of unparalleled stature,” Khatge wrote on X platfor. H
“His policy of Economic Liberalisation and Rights-based welfare paradigm profoundly transformed the lives of crores of Indians, virtually creating a Middle Class in India and lifting crores out of poverty. I mourn the loss of a lifelong senior colleague, a gentle intellectual and a humble soul who embodied the aspirations of India, having risen through the ranks with unwavering dedication, Kharge wrote.
The Congress chief said he is proud to have been a part of his Cabinet as Labour Minister, Railway Minister and Social Welfare Minister.
“A man of action rather than words, his immense contribution to nation-building will forever be etched in the annals of Indian history. In this moment of sorrow, I extend my deepest and heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and countless admirers. May they get the strength to overcome this huge loss. His enduring legacy of ushering in India’s growth, welfare, and policies of inclusivity will forever be cherished. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” he said.
The Indian Youth Congress (IYC) said: We are deeply saddened by the loss of our beloved former PM, Dr. Manmohan Singh ji. His visionary leadership, integrity, and compassion inspired a generation of Indians. We, at IYC, pay our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones. May his legacy continue to guide us towards a brighter future for our nation.
Congress MP Sonia Gandhi reposted this message on X.
Shiv Sena leader and former Maharashtra Minister Aaditya Thackeray recalled that his brief meeting with him, at Manmohan Singh’s residence, made “an everlasting impression on me, of how PMs can be truly humble, graceful and dignified, despite the very many achievements marked out against their name and tenure”.
“For someone like me, born in the 90s, the opening up of India to the world and vice versa, was like growing up in a decade where each day was new, and the world was brought closer to home, thanks to him. Probably one of those people in India, who have had a huge impact on our lives, and the country at large. He truly put our nation on a world stage.
As he said about himself while taking on all the unfounded criticism, “history would be kinder”, we as Indians truly believe, that the present too will be kinder to his statesman like legacy, as we all bid him a sorrowful goodbye. Such true gentlemen are rare in politics, even rarer when they reach the pinnacle of national politics.
