Book on Supreme Court writ petition 1056/90 brings out the harsh truth
HYDERABAD, Aug 14 (The CONNECT) – 1056 by 90.
That’s the title of a book written by SM Chandra Shekhar Sharma on pharma companies’ pollution in Patancheru based on a Writ Petition No. 1056 by 90 before the Supreme Court of India.
The book explains how pharma companies in Patancheru in Hyderabad are creating environmental destruction and what kind of movements and agitations have been undertaken by the people’s groups.
Companies that make drugs to cure diseases are becoming a reason for spreading diseases and killing people, environmentalist Prof. Haragopal, who unveiled the book along with veteran journalist Dr K. Srinivas, said.
Prof. Haragopal said, “This is a fascinating book. The public response against polluting pharma companies is poor, though the factories are ruining lives.
Destruction of the environment and causing pollution in the name of development is a wrong model and intolerable, he said.
Dr Sinivas pointed out that sometimes resistance comes from even from the media and the public because the projects in question are supposed to be for development. Unlike other people’s movements, environmental and pollution movements do not enjoy the same public support as other people’s movements, he said.
Dr. Kalapala Babu Rao, another environmentalist said 2 crore people who went on the road in America forced the policymakers to come up with environmental and work safety laws. “We can’t make changes unless and until we force our rulers,” he said,
Sharma said that the Patancheru-Bollaram anti-pollution movement came with the demand to strike a balance between development and the environment. The local people and farmers were in distress due to the pharma project.
The Patancheru-Bollaram Writ Petition 1056/1990 came up for hearing in the Supreme Court and resulted in several crucial judgments. It was later transferred to the High Court for monitoring the implementation of the verdict. The case was reviewed by the High Court for a decade. The case was later transferred to the National Green Tribunal (NGT).
Janachaitanya Publications’ CEO B. Ramesh said that they would publish books on any issue that would benefit society.
